Is Liver Cancer Associated With Harvoni, Sovaldi, And Other Direct-Acting Antiviral Medications For Hepatitis C?

Conflicting Findings From Different Medical Studies Leave The Extent Of This Drug Safety Issue Uncertain At Present Time

UPDATE:   “New Safety Issue: Direct-Acting Antivirals Drugs For Hepatitis C Such As Harvoni And Sovaldi Could Cause Liver Failure

(1/30/17)

Back in April 2016 we posted this article, “European Drug Regulators Consider Whether Harvoni, Sovaldi, And Other New “Hep-C” Drugs May Cause Liver Cancer Return, Hepatitis B Reactivation“.

As regards the liver cancer risks that have been mentioned in connection with the hepatitis C drugs Sovaldi and Harvoni, during the nine months since our earlier article, there have mixed messages about whether there is an apparent side-effect situation or not.

We start our update on this still emerging drug safety issue with this April 2016 Medscape news report, “Liver Cancer Found in Hepatitis C Patients on New Antivirals“, from which we get this excerpt:

In a surprising number of patients with hepatitis C and cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma develops within weeks of starting treatment with direct-acting antivirals, new research suggests.

“I do not think that direct-acting antivirals are directly responsible,” said lead investigator Stefano Brillanti, MD, from the University of Bologna, Italy.

“The hypothesis is that immune surveillance may be reduced too rapidly,” he told Medscape Medical News. “You have an immediate drop in viremia, but also attenuation of inflammation. I think inflammation is a bad thing in terms of hepatitis progression, but it may be a good thing in terms of controlling cancer.”

The study by Dr Brillanti’s team, presented here at the International Liver Congress 2016 [Abstract LBP506. Presented April 14, 2016], suggests that patients with hepatitis C should be closely monitored after treatment with direct-acting antivirals. Two days earlier, a study conducted by a team from the University of Barcelona in Spain suggested the same thing (J Hepatol. Published online April 12, 2016).

Both studies indicate that patients with a history of hepatocellular carcinoma have the highest risk of developing a tumor after direct-acting antiviral therapy, but new diagnoses were also reported.

Then we move forward to this November 2016 article published by PracticeUpdate as part of their Gastroenterology section, “Direct-Acting Antiviral Medications for Hepatitis C Virus Infection Do Not Raise Cancer Risk“, from which we get this more recent information:

Patients with hepatitis C who take direct-acting antiviral medications have been found to be at no higher risk of developing liver cancer than those who do not take the medication. If they do develop liver cancer, however, they might be at an increased risk of more aggressive, infiltrative patterns of cancer.

This finding of a retrospective database study was reported at The Liver Meeting 2016, from November 11 โ€“ 15.

Alfredo Alberti, MD, of the University of Padova, Italy, explained, โ€œData on clinical outcomes in cirrhotic patients with hepatitis C treated with direct-acting antiviral agents are still scanty and controversial. This is the case concerning the development of a liver cancer, one of the most frequent and deadly complications of hepatitis C virus infection.โ€

Recent studies have suggested the possibility of increased risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma during and after direct-acting antiviral treatment in patients infected with hepatitis C virus….

Dr. Alberti concluded, โ€œThe results, while confirming that direct-acting antiviral treatment doesnโ€™t increase the overall risk of hepatocellular carcinoma, indicate that even successful antiviral therapy does not prevent hepatocellular carcinoma, at least during the first 6 to 12 months after initiation of treatment.โ€

He continued, โ€œDuring this interval, microscopic and initially invisible foci of hepatocellular carcinoma might even be boosted in growth as consequence of profound immunological and molecular changes in the liver microenvironment following abrupt cessation of hepatitis C virus replication. It is mandatory, therefore, that patients treated with direct-acting antiviral medications with advanced liver disease continue to be monitored for hepatocellular carcinoma.โ€

We will continue to monitor the medical literature and watch for any drug regulatory agency action concerning the possible association between direct-acting antiviral hepatitis C drugs like Sovaldi and Harvoni with liver cancer diagnoses, be it the initial incidence or a recurrence of the hepatocellular carcinoma.

This sounds suspiciously like what happened to my husband. After trying different treatments for years, in August 2014 he was finally declared hep-c free after taking Sovaldi; a couple/few weeks later, the first liver tumor was discovered. It was surgically removed, but HCC aggressively returned and metastasized. He died in January 2017.

I was treated with Harvoni from Dec 2015-Jun 2016. In July 2016 they found a legion (small) in my liver. That wasn’t so big a deal because I was being evaluated for a liver transplant. Within weeks after that a second, much larger sized legion was found. Now in Oct, a spot was found on my spine, which recently was diagnosed as cancer in the L4-L5 lumbar spine cancer. This put an end to my having a transplant altogether and the prognosis is 1 year of life left. Went to the ER a couple of weeks ago and don’t recall if it was two separate doctors or the same one saying it twice but he said they are linking Harvoni with cancer. I figured there must be more people out there which is how I landed on this site.
What more is being done besides me telling my story?

My dad went through a few different Hep C treatments. He had moderate short-term success with a couple. Harvoni cured his Hep C last year. He died of Singnet Ring Cell Adenocarcinoma last week. It happened fast. It had spread all over his abdominal region. Shut down his lymph nodes and caused him to get pneumonia, which is why he finally went to the doctor. It took almost two weeks before he was healthy and stable enough to get a biopsy. He died two days after his official diagnosis.
I’m 99.9% sure Harvoni causes cancer.

    Hi Lisa
just found this website. A similar thing happened to my husband. When he went for the Hep C treatment in March 2016 they found two small tumors in his liver. They were covered with a chemical to stop further growth. He then went on to the new Hep C treatment Within 3 months he had developed an aggressive cancer tumor in his pulmonary artery. They tried to treat this with SIRT (radiation into the liver). The cancer moved to his lungs then his eye. He died in March 2017 from liver failure.
For others with Hep C I really hope they are keeping a close check on this new medication.

My husband died of a very aggressive undifferentiated cancer after just completing his Harvoni treatments. I posted his story on another website and have watched there as other similar stories have emerged. I am absolutely convinced that Harvoni triggers very aggressive cancers.

My father has lived with Hep C since it was contracted back in Vietnam and now he is gone less than 2 months after finishing Harvoni. He tried other treatments, but they did not work. The Veterans hospital informed him of the miracle Harvoni treatment that would cure his Hep C with little to no side effects. He started the 3 month treatment and finished just before Christmas 2016. The treatment was successful in curing the Hep C, but he would have taken the Hep C back if he only knew the grim outcome from this treatment.
He was fairly healthy living a normal life prior to treatment with no major complications or side effects from Cirrhosis. He was never diagnosed with cancer. All his blood tests and scans came back clean prior to treatment. Just after he finished the treatment in mid December 2016, he was diagnosed with a huge, aggressive cancerous mass in his liver that spread so aggressively to all of his organs that he died on January 23, 2017. The cancer cells even showing up in his blood tests directly “after” the treatment…not before.
His death was a direct result of the Harvoni treatment. From what I’ve researched, while it suppresses the virus that causes Hep C, it also suppresses good cells in the body that help to keep cancer cells “in check”. Essentially, it allows any cancer cells to run rampant and multiply. I have found another forum where there are tons of people that experienced the exact same thing as my dad. I am shocked that there is no lawsuit addressing these issues “yet”.
What hurts the most is that they still don’t even acknowledge that this IS a side effect. Patients need to be aware of “all” side effects, not just the buttered up version, so that patients can make an informed decision. These big pharmaceutical companies are just out to make a quick buck and at over $100,000 for each individual treatment and VA hospitals gladly paying it at taxpayers expense, there’s a lot of money at stake. I wonder if they will ever take responsibility. I also find it hard to believe that the VA Hospital was not aware of this happening to other patients.

I am continuing to monitor this Harvoni – liver cancer situation. Here is a more recent (April 2017) article I wrote about it:

At the present time we are not handling Harvoni liver cancer drug injury cases — rather, only liver failure, acute liver injury, severe liver damage, and reactivation of hepatitis B cases.
However, this may change if the medical evidence continues to show there may be an association, or “link”, between Harvoni (as well as other direct-acting antivirals hepatitis C drugs) and liver cancer.

    Hi Community,
I’m writing on behalf of my brother. He completed the treatment of Harvoni June 2016 and within weeks diagnosed with liver cancer (one tumor) he was immediately placed on transplant list and three embolization treatments were administered. We came back for CT scan and the tumors had grown to over ten and he was removed from transplant list. The team prescribed more embolization treatments again when we returned the tumors continued to grow the liver had been severely compromised embolizations were immediately stopped. Swelling began to the point he was unable to wear any of his clothes. Lasik was prescribed and Sarafadin was prescribed. My brother is currently in the hospital, his blood pressure skyrocked, kidney starting to fail and liver deteriorating fast. The doctors have informed us they have done all they can do. He needs to get his affairs in order. I think Harvoni is a wonderful drug and it has helped millions but I do think it should not be prescribed to everyone. There has to be some connection with so many people having the same results. I am writing this post for several reasons first and foremost I hope this will help families and their loved ones with this dangerous disease perhaps someone is just beginning this process and they might want to weigh all their options and finally I think it is not until a class action law suit is filed that serious matters get the attention they deserve. We are losing too many lives to this dangerous disease. God Bless all the families that have posted here and for all families struggling with this disease. Regina Brown Chicago

    Hello,
My partner of many years, ohn was diagnosed with hepatitis C in January 2016. He began treatment with Harvoni immediately after a clear liver biopsy and several clear scans. He was declared Hep C free in April 2016 and again in October, 2016. In January 2017 he was diagnosed with a very aggressive liver cancer that rapidly spread to his bones and other organs. He died on March 12, 2017. He was convinced that Harvoni caused his liver cancer. I understand that the research on this is preliminary, but the fact that they are starting to give It to children really terrifies me. Has there been a complaint sent to the FDA about this drug?

Hi, is there any lawsuits against harvarni for sudden death? My husband took it with interferon for 3months and 3weeks after completing the drugs he died from total organ faliure. Totally unexpected by doctor’s. He was only 60. He told me everyday he was on it he felt like it was killing him and he was having vision problem.
When I came home from the hospital after he passed a letter had come saying congratulations you are cured!

What about those of us who are 2 1/2 years post treatment with major health problems now we didn’t have prior. I live with terrible joint pain and can’t work my job anymore. I am exhausted and weak. There are hundreds if not thousands of us out there that got sick once we started treatment. Swelling in all kinds of places with cramping and nerve pain everywhere that isn’t going away. I live in terror of liver cancer now and belong to a group with many family members of those that have died from Harvoni treatment.

My mother died from Solvadi!! She was one of the first one to try out this damn drug. We had no idea it would kill her. She was 80yo and they put her on this medicine in March 2014. Within 5 weeks of taking this awful drug, my mother could no longer walk due to extreme fatigue. She was very active… swimming, walking, and biking with me prior to this. Yes my 80yo biked with me, yes she did!. After 5 weeks of Solvadi, she suddenly needed a walker. It got only worse. She started bleeding from her nose and gums really bad. We had no idea what was going on and the doctor advised nothing… “continue treatment” was all we were told. By the end of the treatment, 12 weeks later, my mother was bleeding behind her eyes, her platelets had quit functioning, she could no longer walk. We took her to the ER and they said her blood was like sludge, thick as mud. She started to need platelet transfusions every two weeks… via plasmapheresis.. it was horrible. They put a port in her upper chest that bled constantly. My poor Mom!! The entire summer she was so sick…we had no idea what was happening. They kept checking for tumors, cancer, etc… nothing came up. They could not come up with what happened to my mother after she took Solvadi and Olysio!! In October she was hospitalized for another platlet transfusion called plasmapherisis. It was horrible. They put a port in the side of her neck this time… sticking straight out ๐Ÿ™ My poor Mom!!! October 6 I was a the hospital with her to make sure everything was okay… I came home and within minutes they called and said my mother suffered a major stroke to her brainstem. She was paralyzed and could not talk. She soon went into a coma and died 7 days later. Solvadi and Olysio did this to my mother!!!, I watched it happen!!!
Gilead needs to pay for this. I lost my Mom due to that medicine. She was completely fine before she took that damn drug!!

I am concerned about the Hepatitis C medication, made by Gilead, called Harvoni.
My dad had Hepatitis C for many years. Doctors told him with his health he would die of old age before he would die of the disease. When Harvoni, a cure for Hep C was released we thought it was a miracle! My dad had a ct scan of his liver done in September of 2016 and it was completely clear. He was given the ok to begin his 18 week treatment of Harvoni. He took his medication as prescribed and his treatment ended in December 2016. Tests showed my dad’s Hep C was not gone. He fell into the 4% that Harvoni does not work for. We were all discouraged. By the end of January 2017 my Dad was feeling terrible. 69 year old man, very active and ate a fairly healthy diet had no energy. He began having symptoms such as itchy skin, feeling of fullness, distended stomach and abdominal pain. He tried to tough it out thinking it would pass. He couldn’t take it anymore and went to the doctor on February 16, 2017. A ct scan was preformed and it revealed my dad had liver cancer, Heptocellular Carcinoma, and a tumor in the main vein in his liver, the portal vein. Given the diagnosis and severity there weren’t any treatment options to save my dad. He passed away April, 1 2017. I can’t shake the feeling that Harvoni had something to do with this. I have read about other people who’s stories are all to similar.
If this drug is causing liver cancer it needs to be stopped so another family doesn’t have to watch their loved one go through what I watched my father go through. Something has to be done! I am sharing my dad’s story in hopes of it falling into the hands of someone that can assist in getting Harvoni and the outcomes it causes looked into.

    Hello All,
I learned earlier today that my aunt was informed that she has 10 months to live due to recently being diagnosed with liver cancer after taking the drug, Harvoni, for Hep C. Of course, I, as well as my family, are devastated and upset by the fact that this drug was the catalyst to catapult this illness into an aggressive state and we will, therefore, lose our loved one as a result. Therefore, we decided to do research to review other related cases and attorneys that specialize in this area and came across the site.
By the way, I am very sorry to hear about the loss of all of your loved ones. After reviewing your post and others, we would like to file a class action suit or find a good attorney that is accepting these types of cases if Attorney Lamb is unable to take on the specified lung cancer cases related to this drug at the present time. If any one has any information regarding who we could talk to to represent us and/or you or you know others we could join who would like to file a class action lawsuit regarding this matter, please let me know at your earliest convenience.
    Thank you.
    Best Regards,
    Veronica

My son took harvoni when he found out he had He found he had Hep C in 2016. He was cured of the Hep C and we thought everything was great. About 2 months ago he started having very bad pain in his lower stomach and has now been diagnosed with stage 4 bile duct cancer. It has spread to his liver and is in his bones. His doctores can’t believe that he has this type of cancer becuase it’s normally found in older people and he is only 35. I find it hard to bleieve that all these stories are not connected by these 2 drugs. My son is in the hospital right now receiving his first round of chemo. They told him this is not curable and are only doing it to extend his life as much as possible. They have removed over 7 lites of fluid from his abdomen and he is in great pain. We are looking to find some THC oil to help him with his pain because we don’t want him on opiates. I wish you all peace but this is so wrong. They should have told peopleIm sure he would of lived with the Hep C longer.

I have just obtained the FDA reports of adverse events due to Harvoni. In analzying, I find a lot of HHC and liver cancer being reported….however the majority of those are not from the USA. If you have not reported your or your loved one’s adverse events (side effects) to the FDA, please do so. There cannot be changes to warnings if no one is telling the FDA what is happening. Just google “FDA reporting of adverse events” to find how to do that. Be well.

Amy was my Mother-In-Law. She told my husband that she was doing research on Harvoni and it’s links to cancer. She strongly felt that was what caused her cancer. I just started looking into it and landed on this site and found her comments here. She passed on July 17th.

I found 103 testimonials on several websites where people who took these drugs had simuliar outcomes. I have talked to several lawyer none of which will take the case. Have you contacted a lawyer? From the doctors who prescribed this to the drug company who supplied this, all of them need to be held accountable.

I have read over 100 testimonials of similiar outcomes. I’m curious to find someone who may have reached out to a lawyer and whether or not that lawyer is taking their case. This drug is deadly. It is a very expensive drug and the doctor who prescribes it get a nice cut of that and although it may work for some there are a lot of people dying from it.

I’m trying to gather a list of people who have taken it and have had a good outcome as oppose to those who had a bad outcome. I’m also curious to know if you had cirrohsis of the liver when you took this drug as they may be the link to so many deaths.

Today, he is coming home from the hospital on hospice because there is nothing they can do about his extremely aggressive pancreatic/bile duct cancer. He was a extremely healthy active person before the drug. I KNOW it’s from Harvoni after reading very similar stories. There needs to be a lawsuit.

He died 18 days later Feb. 24th.

Reading comments here about Harvoni. Not sure if this message posting. My best friend is on death bed as of this writing, after finishing harvoni treatment last January, cured of hep C but then started having stomach issues. Took a few months and one MRI to discover a massive in operable liver tumor. FOLKS, you need to be scanned before and after for liver cancer/tumors and watch very carefully to catch right away.

In April of that year he started and completed the 12 week treatment with successful SVR treatment was tough he lost a lot of weight his eyes were dark and he was so tired but he never took time off from work he continued moving forward and staying active by Christmas 2015 he looked great his normal color returned and he was pretty much back to his active self we were sp happy and began to praise and advocate Harvoni to others fast forward 20 mths and he is like a man 30 yrs his senior he has severe rumatoid pain in his hands back bones his intestines are a wreck he goes fromconstipation to diarrhea and back the heptoligist contributes it all to cirrhosis manifestations but he is slowly deteriorating right in front of me in 37 yrs Iโ€™ve never seen him shut down and incapacitated to this degree he is suffering a slow cruel impending death and i fear this drug played a role in his demise. Thank you, Bekah. I am so sorry you find yourself faced with this difficult decision, and I hope you have the loving support you’ll need throughout your journey, whatever you decide to do. What I hoped for, in first commenting here on Mr Lamb’s article, was to put a a bit of our personal experience out there for folks to consider when making their own decisions. So, it is both painful and gratifying to see your comment. Information like this is a complicated luxury we didn’t have, as the drug was so newly approved when we decided he would take it. Would we have treated his HCV, had there been such stories at our fingertips? I honestly don’t know, but they would have at least given us pause. This much I can say confidently: we were always under the impression that HCV- was preferable to HCV+; I don’t necessarily believe that to be true in every situation now.

The same thing happened to my husband, passed away in July 2015. I told people I believed it got his cancer because of the Harvoni and nobody believed me. A very good friend of mine asked me if she should start taking Harvoni for her hep C and I told her that if she felt fine, got a clean bill of health from her doctor (except for the hep C) then in my opinion she should not take it. She told me she is getting solicited from Gilead (the manufacturer of Harvoni) like big time.

I feel very deflated after reading all this. 2015 I had the 12 week Harvoni treatment. I have cleared hcv geno 1a. I haven’t had tests since 12 months ago. Dr decided to do thyroids lfts etc. Got results back yesterday. Abnormal lfts much higher than post harvoni. Am having liver ultrasound later this week and dr wants me back next Monday to see results and do further blood tests. I am in Australia and have been researching longterm side effects of harvoni.can’t seem to find anything relating to this. Late last year I was diagnosed with irratable bowel syndrome and osteoarthritis in fingers and knees.I am 56 y.o. I rang my liver nurse who told me that she hadn’t come across others with side effects like this but she would put these symptoms to the manufacturer. I am extremely worried. I feel so sad for others who have lost loved ones and I really hope that we all haven’t been misled by the Harvoni miracle.

My friend took Harvoni a year ago, and now has a cancerous liver tumor. I think more research needs to be done on Harvoni.

My dad had Hep C from a blood transfusion 50 years ago, took Harvoni in 2016 and developed hepatocellar carcinoma immediately after. He found the tumor when he went for the follow up blood work that showed he cleared the Hep C. We listed for a liver transplant.
His small right lobe tumor was treated with Y90 radiation beads. That appeared to work however on follow up for that they discovered a tumor in his portal vein. This disqualified him for the liver transplant. When you have cancer you need to wait 6 months before you get considered for a liver because aggressive cancer will reinfect a new liver. So you need to stay within the Milan criteria (or whichever scales the center uses). Most cancer patients get disqualified.
So the head of the liver dept put him on Sorafenib which was a huge mistake. It was the โ€œstandard of careโ€ and 2 major cancer centers told us there was no better treatment for liver vascular tumors. Not only did it not work and made him sick for 2 months, it tripled the original right lobe tumor that we thought had been killed. This is where we lost the battle.
We changed his insurance and were then able to go to Cleveland Clinic. They can treat vascular tumors with SBRT radiation, gamma knife! Simple, non invasive procedure. I was so upset that this option was not presented to us. The other โ€œspecialistsโ€ were unaware this was being done.
Cleveland had to radiate the now large right lobe mass also. This eventually led to liver failure.
Our last hope was an amazing immunotherapy interventional radiologist named Dr Jason Williams. He is cutting edge and performs treatments not yet FDA approved here, but available in other countries. Google him and read on his approach. Williams cancer institute.com.
He is based in Atlanta but operates in Mexico City in a very clean private hospital with equipment better than in US. He performs cryoablation with intratumoral injections of Optivo and Yervoy and has a comprehensive follow up protocal involving probiotics, loss dose oral chemo pill and other things. His staff coordinates your rides and we stayed in their recommended hotel in the business district that was very safe and convenient. It was an amazing experience.
It was the most effective, least invasive procedure we endured. The woman who referred me had cancer with Mets, got treated, and is now 3 years cancer free. This doctor was amazing. Unfortunately my dad did not have enough liver function to sustain the immune response and he passed September 6,2017. I wish we would have gone here first. Immunotherapy works best when disease is small. This was not covered by insurance but we didnโ€™t care, it was his life.
If you have newly diagnosed liver cancer, I strongly encourage you to do your research and look into immunotherapy as our US medical system can not effectively treat liver cancer yet. Dr Williams is trying to start clinical trials at Case Western with this approach.
He recommended I read CURING CANCER WITH IMMUNOTHERAPY by Renee Chee. Excellent read. Can buy on Amazon for under $20.
I would be glad to share more detail on our experience if you are newly diagnosed with liver cancer post Harvoni…my hope would be to help someone else learn from our tragic experience.

My liver enzymes are elevated and Im scared something else might be wrong. I have just found this site and I am saddened by what I’ve read. I took harvoni for 6 months in 2016 and was told I am free of hep C. In March of 2017 I was diagnosed with polycythemia vera cancer of the blood & bone marrow. I take pills everyday and I am told there is no cure. I am also at stage 3 cirrhosis of the liver. My cancer doctor just gave me a prognosis of 5 yrs or less. I’m not sure what to do next but I try to live each day as it may be my last. I am a bit fearful and cannot not be afraid. I pray for each person on here as I read your stories. Please in return, pray for a cure…thanks!

First of all my heart felt condolences to all who have suffered.
The latest research conclusion that I could find regarding treatment and cancer is the following, โ€œThe collective findings did not support the notion that DAAs promote hepatocarcinogensis, researchers concluded.
Maan and Feld concurred with that conclusion, adding that since achieving SVR does not eliminate risk of the development of HCC in those with cirrhosis, “early treatment to prevent cirrhosis is the preferred strategy.โ€
So my question to all is.. did you have or were you checked for cirrhosis before treatment?

Hi Tami, so sorry that you are having to go through this. The exact same thing happened with my 56 year old husband. Again, his age, race, etc…should not have been a factor for getting the rare cancer. I, too, am convinced Harvoni is to blame. My husband had the exact same symptoms, stomach pain, etc. He was diagnosed in February of 2018. He took a few rounds of chemo, but the toll it took on his body was not worth the amount of time it would extend his life. We stopped treatment in May and he passed July 18th of 2018. There is something wrong with this drug and it needs to be stopped.

Again as another posted. I too was one of the first candidates to Harvoni. With Cirrhosis at stage 4, I went through a 24 week course of Harvoni. Successively & clinically responded to treatment. I did experience esophageal varices with minimal bleeding that placed me back in the hospital. An CT scan was emitted and found two small liver tumors (hepatocellular carcinoma) with blood supply indicating active, with a follow-up MRI. I was scheduled by U of M university hospital for SBRT Radiation. It was successful. I now have routine MRI’s twice a year in monitoring to re-occurrence. So yes, hepatocellular carcinoma about 4 months after Harvoni treatment. However the bleeding varices may have been a God sent occurance that allowed the tumors to be found soon enough. Going on near 5 year HCV clearance and lifetime routine to MRI monitoring for hepatocellular carcinoma. Next time should hepatocellular carcinoma regain a foothold, I intend to pursue Proton Therapy radiation. Look this technology up for some of you still fighting cancer lesions. Especially for eliminating the damage of good liver tissue by use of protons entering & exiting your body! MD Anderson originally brought this technology to the forefront. Now as the expensive equipment has become further economical to hospital administrators there are many more hospitals offering this Proton therapy!

Wow! We all thought Harvoni was the miracle drug.
14 months ago I got sick and was diagnosed with Hep C. I took Harvoni for eight weeks because my viral load was low, treatment naive, and no cirrhosis. Six months later the Hep C was back. This time I took, Vosevi (for 12 weeks).
I was just diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma in my liver with a tumor 8.4 centimeters in size. That’s half the size of the largest organ in my body.
My first appointment with an Oncologist is Wednesday. We must tell our stories!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do not accuse a Family Physician of “getting a big cut out of that”- I have never been offered money (or anything else more epensive than a pen with their name on it or a sandwich from the deli down the street + a Diet Coke while,we discuss a new medicine. I am beside myself contemplating that this apparently has happened to one of my patients, He was also my “smalltown pal” since fifth grade and until finding this online today have been baffled how his bloodwork could’ve showed “no problem” in mid-October but he passed on March 10th. I wish that this story had been more prominent in the journals I get in my mail every month so maybe we’d have stayed away from this treatment !

Tomorrow it will be 1 year since my husband died(5/19/2018). Was cured of hep c in 2015 with sovaldi. Did abdominal scan and liver biopsy in 2015 diagnosed with fibrosis once blood work confirmed hep c gone but still evidence of the virus he then in jan of 2018 had severe abdominal pain and severe diahrrea for 1 month. Went to ER scan done and had stage 4 hepatoma was in liver, portal veins and bile ducts. Chemo doesn’t touch thus type of cancer did new Y90 radiation and tumor grew. He suffered a horrible death very painful. The thought that if an abdominal scan had been done in 2016 maybe they would have found it early and he would still be here. I believe the doctors messed up,he went to his doctor every year and a scan was never done, just blood work and only because my husband was scared of hep c coming back so he would ask the doctor to do blood work. Why didn’t the doctors do an abdominal scan?

My husband died this past December shortly after harvoni treatment, from a very aggressive and rare cancer that they finally found in his liver. His symptoms were worse after Harvoni, but by the time they found the cancer, he was given weeks to possible months. He died 2 weeks later. There were no tests done on his liver at all during said treatment. But hey, the Hep C was gone.

I cannot believe that all these deaths occurred after taking Harvoni and the pharmaceutical company will not take responsibility for this.
My husband was diagnosed with hep c in 1999. He too was in Vietnam and worked as an officer in a jail for 25 years.

After fighting with several types of chemo, radiation he is now on Palliative care until he is ill enough for hospice. People are dying and nobody is doing anything about this. We should all get together and fight for our rights.

My father is also going through a treatment right now, (third day today) and he is experiencing horrible headaches, muscle pains and blurry vision. The side effects are bad enough to influence his normal everyday routine life. He can no longer play golf. I mean golf is not a very physical sport, but he told me this morning he can no longer hit the ball last night when he wen for a practice.
So I was searching on line for side effects, I found this website. All of these stories amazingly share similarities. Can everyone please explain more in detail about their conditions? That way we can compare in more specifics and give each other more information? Maybe blood test results, viro counts, ultrasounds, and what tests they did prior, during and after.
For my father(52year old healthy male), prior to the Hep C medications(ledipasvir and sofosbuvir combination pills once a day) he did the following tests.
Complete blood count : All normal
    Hep C/ Viro count: 350000
    Alpha fetoprotein test: 9
Abdominal Ultrasound: Liver -normal Kidney- normal Gall-normal Prostate-One 9mm cyst.
MRI wasn’t done, and I don’t know if above test results can indicate or conclude that he doesn’t have cirrhosis?
He started the medications on Oct. 22nd. No previous health issues, no medications that he is on other than Hep C meds.
Im so sorry for all of your lost. And it worries me so much that all of these stories are so hard to find in media.
Thank you very much for sharing though, it will greatly help all the people that are going through Hep C.
I will watch very closely and continue to update.

It’s been a week since he took the medications. The horrible symptoms did get better and the duration of the side effect got shorter after the 5th day of the medication. We also found out he has genotype 1b, but the doctor didn’t change the treatment plan.
I have scheduled an appointment with another dr. on Monday, so we can do a thorough screening for cirrhosis and HCC. Hopefully everything is okay.

He is currently in home hospice with only days left. I would very much h like to learn of any class action law suits against the manufacture of Harvoni.

I was so excited when I found out that there was a medicine that would finally cure Hep. C, with hardly any side effects. It worked. Then I started having multiple problems. First they noticed a growth on my right lung, then when they performed a CAT scan there were also tumors on my adrenal gland and then when they did a bone biopsy they found that my breast cancer had come back after 19 years and it is stage 4 to the bone in multiple locations. What can we do? I feel that someone should have know something. I guess I should have suspected something when they pulled the commercials…

My dad contracted Hep C through a blood transfusion he received after a bad car accident when he was 19. He lived a very long time with no side affects and his tests showed great liver function. Absolutely no problems from the Hep C. After taking Harvoni twice, he was told he was cured of Hep C. Everything went down hill from there. He developed a very aggressive liver cancer. We were told he had 6 months to a year. After an immediate biopsy he was gone within 3 weeks. I am completely convinced that Harvoni caused his cancer. I have since learned that way too many others have had the same thing happen. Someone needs to stop this drug from killing others.

    Hi,
Writing from Serbia, Europe. My father passed away from kidney TCC and prostate cancer (both rare cancer forms) after 1.5 yrs of fighting them.
He took Sofosbuvir/Ledipasvir in July-September 2018. Everything clear before treatment (biochemistry, ultrasound). Only one month after finishing those drugs, he was diagnosed with metastatic kidney TCC (at the moment of diagnosis it spread to lymph nodes and lungs). Strange, since kidney TCC usually grows 10+ years before metastasis occur. What is unbelivable is that even with regular checks during chemo for kidney cancer, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which was resistant to all treatments.

My husband is dying of stage 4 liver cancer, he too took Harvoni Jan 2019 March 2019 his liver was looked at October of 2019 all was well. MAY 2020 He started to feel pain went in took 7 weeks to get a biopsy done, another 2 weeks to see an oncologist, another 10 days to get a get scan, another week to get results and then another 2 weeks to get meds and here we are. He is going down fast and have stressed that to every doc and nurse but due to covid it just took this long to get things done. The cancer has moved to his kidneys and spine and they just said well too bad. Then to add insult to injury the copay for nexAvar was $3,000.00/month. We really thought we had covered ourselfs properly since we went from private insurance to medicare, supplemental and prescription plan, He will be 67 in this year. and he won’t see his next birthday.

My husband was shot in LA in the late 80″s by a gang – wrong time, wrong place. He was rushed to UCLA where they saved his life but we discovered many years later that he had contaminated blood as they were not screening at that time on the West Coast. He knew he had Hep. C in 1998 and eventually went onto Harvoni when it came out. 3 months later they found a neuroendocrine tumor and liver cancer. He struggled for the next r years and died this February.

My husband was shot by a gang (wrong time/wrong place) in the late 80’s. UCLA saved his life but gave him contaminated blood. We did not find out for 25 years when they discovered he had Hep. C. He managed to get onto a trial to take Harvoni for 8 weeks as opposed to 12 weeks. The Hep C was cured, but 3 months later on a check up at the clinic and with ultra sound, they found tumors – he was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer. He battled for nearly 4 years and tried everything. I can’t help but feel it was the Harvoni that did this to him. I would be very interested in a class action suite if it can be proven with enough people.

I was given tainted blood in 1980. I was very sick for 3months. The dr. was treating me for my heart. I finally went to Vanderbilt. They found out pretty quick that my heart was fine. They found I had Hep C. I had it 36 years when I developed cirrhosis. The dr. gave me Harvoni. It has been 5 years and now I have been diagnosed with liver cancer. The first thing I thought was โ€œthe Harvoni caused itโ€ but the Dr. said no it didnโ€™t. Donโ€™t know how she would know. I feel 100% that Harvoni caused it.

My husband took Harvoni and was told he was cured! Doctors never monitored him. He died of liver cancer about 5 years later! Still trying to understand that there is no protocol after taking this drug.

I run a private FB page for those who have been injured by Harvoni or Epclusa. We are finding that other cancers have popped up during/post treatment but especially liver. You can reach me at listenwithin@att.net or look for the Harvoni/Epclusa Post Treatment Support Group on FB. Sorry to hear of your situation. Cathy

took sovaldi and ribivirin fir hep c 3 months in 2015 I was 195 and my liver was not really bad and I was still very strong and I thought I could be even better if I got rid of her c well yes for first 3 months after I was cured I felt better then my feet started swelling first time ever in my life and I began having all sorts of vein and muscle problems and lost weight 50lbs and I was very healthy and been taking all sorts of supplements and I am still alive I believe because of being so strong though I am not anymore its been 8 years and I did not live I have been barely surviving so I don’t think I dodged this bullet I just thought it was ribivirin and then I start research sovaldi and found this page and I am certain my body is probly full of tumors by now everyday I feel like I am dying and probly don’t have alot longer who knows I can’t believe I lasted this long without any cancer treatments or even knowing where it is though I sure feel it.now I started taking fenbendazole and noticed it makes me feel bit better its a dewormer that’s been proven to kill some cancers and why would that make me feel better like if I has worms maybe it would and if anything it should make me feel worse so I suspect it makes me feel better because I probly have cancer and it must be doing something to it.yes my doctor should not have treated me because I was surely not dying from hep c in fact yes I was much better living with it.everyday I think and want to go to his office and punch him and I am very sorry for all of your losses I can say 100% doctors know that these drugs make people worse and they know people are better off living with hep c than take these drugs I just bet my doctor got some sort of bonus by getting me on the treatment I look like hell still handsome though I feel like 30 years older and now I know why thanks for listening.

I also had Hep c for about 30 years due to blood transfusions for Hemophilia. I took Solvaldi from June to December 2014. Giving thanks to God for my yearly ultrasounds showing all ok.
I did not know about the possible repercussions of these Hep c medications.
I ran into a 2017 Study on the Internet saying that people who had previous infection of Hep b even if itโ€™s resolved,,,,the meds for Hep c can reactivate the hepatitis B and cause problems.
My Hemophilia doctor did not know this, I ended up sending her the article.
I wonder how many people who sadly got hurt by the Hep c meds also had Hep b previously-even if resolved?
Been very disappointed of what we are not told.
