Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is a GLP-1 side effect that harms vision by causing damage to the eyes. In the past week, NAION news reports have put the spotlight on this relatively unknown drug safety issue for such popular drugs as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound, and others.

• Ozempic and Wegovy are drugs with semaglutide as their active ingredient.
• Semaglutide has been linked to nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION).
• NAION is sometimes called an “eye stroke” because it develops when the optic nerve does not receive enough blood flow.
• NAION typically causes sudden vision loss and, in severe cases, can lead to blindness.
• There are currently no proven treatments for NAION.
• The current drug labels for Ozempic and Wegovy do not warn about eye-related side effects, such as possible vision loss.

NAION, Mounjaro, and Zepbound Facts

Here are some facts relevant to these NAION news reports about Mounjaro and Zepbound being associated with this drug side effect that harms vision:

• Nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is characterized by loss of vision due to decreased blood flow to the optic nerve.
• Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a newer and more potent GLP-1 drug intended to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity.
• Besides Mounjaro, there is a second GLP-1RA drug that contains the active ingredient tirzepatide, Zepbound. That medication is used for obesity and weight loss purposes.
• There is some evidence that the NAION eye side effect may be associated with tirzepatide.
• The current drug labels for Mounjaro and Zepbound do not warn about NAION as a side effect associated with loss of eyesight.
